Coffee Growing Areas

In Café de Altura we have coffee from different areas of the country, in order to offer our customers different options when preparing macrolotes.

West Valley

Almost ideal conditions to cultivate of the best grain, cultivating in valleys and slopes ofthe Central Mountain Range in v olcanic soils exceptionally apt for the coffee production.

The average production is between 800,000 and 1,000,000.00 of excellent quality bushels of the types SHB, GHB and HB, good hardness grains and closed fissures.

The Caturra and Catuaí varieties predominate, grown by the producers on some 25,476 hectares and at altitudes of 800 to 1,750 meters.


West Valley coffee is well defined by its  organoleptic characteristics: very good acidity, body and aroma and an identity of origin. The acidity and the body are balanced in the cup, distinguishing characteristics of this coffee.

Central Valley

It is the most populated region, where the capital San José is located and in which the coffee plantations were started, which were then taken to the other 7 producing regions.

In the Central Valley are familiar figures the Irazú, Barva and Poás volcanoes that nourish the soils dedicated to the cultivation of grain.

The Central Valley presents diversity in terms of drink quality, but in general it is a cup that has a very good balance.

The volcanic soils and the climate of the Central Valley produce an excellent cup coffee with a chocolaty presence in its flavor.

Protected by mountain ranges on the Pacific slope, this region is mystic and forest bird sanctuary and producer of the best coffee that is planted in small valleys and mountain slopes.

Coffee growing is the fundamental activity for the socio-economic development of Los Santos. Their lands produce around 700,000 bushels of coffee in fruit with characteristics of uniform ripening. It produces Arabica coffee with characteristics of low bearing, small grain, flat bluish color, good appearance, strictly hard (S.H.B./ SUR).

The coffee production is located between 1,200 and 1,900 meters of altitude, ideal conditions for cultivation.
The combination of altitude, climate and cultivated varieties gives to this coffee organoleptic characteristics very appreciated by the most demanding markets of the world: good body, with a cup of high acidity, fine and non-sharp, excellent aroma, characterized by an intense and slightly intense flavor chocolat.


This region is characterized by the cultivation of coffee in small areas distributed between the provinces of Alajuela, Guanacaste and Puntarenas.

It has a very warm climate, especially in the summer, when temperatures exceed 30º C.

The coffee areas are located in mountainous areas where the temperature is cooler and very characteristic of the mountain ranges that make up this area: Central Volcanic Mountain Range and the Guanacaste Mountain Range.

Coffee production is between 50,000 and 70,000 bushels per harvest.
